Well, I set out to write a song about The One
Who bought us our freedom
To find so many words to explain
Just why it is we need Him
And people told me, “Hey that’s nice,
But don’t say His name explicitly
Genericize and sanitize,
And don’t stir up a controversy”
So I put on my thinking cap
And poured some grape juice in a glass
And jotted down some words to summarize The One
Who calls Himself
CHORUS
The Way, the Truth, the Life
Yeah, everybody’s looking for the Way, the Truth, the Life
Oh and, by the way, His name is Jesus
VERSE 2
Well, look. There, I said it.
I guess I’ve gone and made someone mad
But I can’t bring myself to say I’m sorry
So that’s just too bad
And I may say it plenty more
A thousand times a week before
I see the day when we are not ashamed to say
That Jesus is
CHORUS
The Way, the Truth, the Life
Yeah, everybody’s looking for the Way, the Truth, the Life
Oh, and did I say His name is Jesus?
BRIDGE
Now if you’re listening to this
And you still have a problem with
Me saying J – E – S – U – S, then this verse is for YOU!
VERSE 3
Oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
CHORUS
The Way, the Truth, the Life
Yeah, everybody’s looking for the Way, the Truth, the Life
Oh, His name is Jesus
I’m not sure how to classify this tune. It was inspired by reactions I received from another song I wrote, Mirror Mirror. Even so-called Christians commented about how I mentioned Jesus too many times…oddly enough, that didn’t seem to prevent the song from taking one of the grand prizes in the 2005 Dallas Songwriters competition…
