VERSE 1
They say Jesus changes everything
But when I look it’s hard to see
My reflection in the mirror doesn’t show much change in me
Now I can quote the bible all day long
But there are days I don’t really know
Is it only an act I’m putting on, or does Jesus really show?

CHORUS
Mirror, mirror, on my wall, you cannot tell a lie
But you see only part of me, and not the man inside
Mirror, mirror, if it were my heart that you could see
Would Jesus be reflected in me?

VERSE 2
I go to church as often as I can
I hang around believing friends
I say all the words that make me sound so spiritual to them
But if it’s only the same old man in me
Trying to play by some different rules
Well, then, I’ve really only just become
Another blind, religious fool

CHORUS
Mirror, mirror, on my wall, you cannot tell a lie
But you see only part of me, and not the man inside
Mirror, mirror, if it were my heart that you could see
Would Jesus be reflected,
Would Jesus be reflected in me?

VERSE 3
Well, I can quote the bible all day long
But there are days I don’t really know
Is it only an act I’m putting on, or does Jesus really show?
Does He really show?

CHORUS
Jesus, Jesus, in my heart, you cannot tell a lie
And you see every part of me, not just the man outside
Jesus, if a mirror could reflect the man you see
Would your life be reflected?
Would your life be reflected?
Would Jesus be reflected in me?

TAG
Is it all just game that I’m learning how to play
Or is Jesus really living out His life in me?
Living right, looking good, like a church boy should
But is Jesus really living out His life in me?

Review

Here is what industry professional Roy Elkins, founder and CEO of Broadjam, had to say about this song when he reviewed it for the 2004 Dallas Songwriters competition:

A Christian rock song that questions the depth of the singer’s faith. This song is upbeat and the melody and words match up well.

The opening line “They say Jesus changes everything, but when I look it’s hard to see, my reflection in the mirror doesn’t show much change in me.” Man, what a great opening line. Immediately it sets the tone for the song and sets up the chorus as well.

In the chorus, the singer is singing to a mirror and asking if it sees Jesus reflected in him. The opening line of the chorus is “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, you cannot tell a lie”. This resembles the fairy tale asking a similar thing and creates an instant recall to something we’ve heard before, but not in song. We have all asked the mirror something, regardless of our faith and I believe that is a compelling reason why this song is a hit.

The lyrics are compelling because they exude faith but also create a sense of doubt and conflict – that’s what makes this song brilliant. This song says it, but in a really sensitive and thought-provoking way.

Behind the Music

This is a total remake of a song which I originally recorded in 1999. Only the words remain – although there have been some slight tweaks there as well. Compare it with the old version and you’ll see what a difference 5 years makes!
